Q: Do identical multiples present additional risks during pregnancy?

Mono-amniotic and mono-chorionic gestations do present some additional complications such as cord entanglement and conjoining. Also, if one monochorionic multiple is lost early in pregnancy, the co-multiple is at a greater risk of being miscarried as well.

The greatest risk in a mono-amniotic or mono-chorionic pregnancy is twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. These situations can be managed through vigilant monitoring, and expectant parents should note that these complications are extremely rare in a higher-order multiples.
