Q: How can I prepare for my children’s transition from EI services?

A: Transition is the process in which your child’s services are transferred from the county or state to the school district. Early intervention services are provided until a child reaches age three. At that point, services are taken over by your local school district. To prepare for the transition, first ask your early intervention provider if they provide assistance as some EI centers offer workshops and literature to help parents with this transition. Contacting your school district well in advance of the child’s third birthday gives the school district a chance to access any information/files/test results, etc… to help them best provide services for your child. Depending on the needs of your child, the school may need to hire additional staff, make classrooms accessible, or prepare other accommodations especially if more than one child requires services, as may be the case with multiples.
