Q: How do we inform family/friends about a disability?
A: Informing family and friends is a very personal decision. First, you must be comfortable with the diagnosis. Once you have accepted and understand the challenges a child is facing, then you are best prepared to share the diagnosis. Since those close to you are the people who will be supporting you and perhaps providing care for the child or his or her siblings, providing them with accurate and clear information is critical. Providing informational literature about the disability, such as an article, book, or pamphlet, might be helpful. This approach explains the “facts” of the situation using well-respected resources.
